PRE-SEASON-NIGHT PREMIERSHIPS WON:
Essendon are by far the most successful in terms of night premierships from this trio of clubs, starting with their first night premiership in 1981. Like blokes in flannelette shirts, Essendon’s glory years in terms of night premiership were during the 90s when they won the competition in 1990, 1993, 1994 and 1996, before smashing North Melbourne in 2000 on the way to the flag that season. Since then it’s been a pretty barren run for the Bombers, although they came close to winning it last year when they made the final, only to be beaten by Collingwood. West Coast’s best chance of winning the night competition came in 2005, although they lost that final to Carlton at Etihad Stadium. And, as for Fremantle, well they’re level of success in night premierships is pretty close to their overall level of success in finals. Indeed, the most memorable thing Freo have done in the pre-season competition is become one of the first two sides to play a night match overseas, when they faced off against Brisbane in 1998.

LAST YEAR’S NAB CUP:
All of these clubs are well aware that the momentum gained from a positive NAB Cup can translate into decent performances come the season proper. In 2010 it was Fremantle who enjoyed a fantastic NAB Cup run before going on to make the finals, while last year both West Coast and Essendon achieved similar results. The Bombers started well by smashing Brisbane and then drawing with St Kilda, before building on that first round result with wins over Melbourne and St Kilda prior to their final loss to Collingwood. The Eagles, meanwhile, were coming off the wooden spoon in 2010 and were determined to show that 2011, their 25th season, would be a memorable one. They opened it with wins over Fremantle and Hawthorn in the tri-series Round 1 before accounting for Gold Coast, in the Suns first competitive hit-out over four quarters. But Collingwood proved too good for the Eagles in the semi-final, while Fremantle didn’t even make it past the first round last year.
